Since years, Rakshabandhan has been celebrated all over India and some parts of the world. Basically, the festival celebrates the eternal bond between brothers and sisters who are either biologically related or unrelated. The word ‘Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit actually means “tie or knot”. The occasion is thereby celebrated by tying a holy thread around the wrist and it is believed that the thread is a a bond of protection’. After tying, the sisters pray for the long lives of the brothers. The ritual sometimes involves a tilak on the forehead of the brother smeared by the sister and also an aarti with a lighted diya with prayers and best wishes for the brother.

Historical Significance-
History has witnessed Rakhi tradtions too, when queens used to send Rakhis to nearby kings who despite had differences with the kings. But, the nearby kings to whom the rakhis where sent used to respect the bond and the rakhi and thereby offered to help the kingdom or the queen in the time of distress. The Hindu king, Porus had forgiven Alexander the great, only because Alexander’s wife used to tie a rakhi to King Porus and had earlier asked him not to hurt her husband.
